The pomegranate is a symbol of love, marriage, and rebirth, and is linked to the myth of Persephone and Demeter. Once Persephone had eaten six seeds from a pomegranate, known as the “fruit of the dead” her fate was sealed. She would spend six months of the year as queen of the underworld. In Greece, the New Year is welcomed by opening a pomegranate, many believe you can make a wish on the lucky fruit before you eat it. Greek brides would throw the fruit through the door of their house, scattering the seeds, to ensure a happy marriage.
