The mysterious Mermaid Purses that wash up on the shore in spring and summer are thought to be the bags where mermaids store their combs and mirrors. In reality, they are the empty egg sacs (Chondrichthyes) of rays, skates, chimaeras, and sharks. In Cornish folklore, they are considered highly magical objects that, when buried on the corner of your property, will protect your family and home, and finding a Mermaid Purse is said to foretell an impending financial windfall.
