The month of January gets its name from the Latin word Januarius after the Roman god Janus, guardian god of portals, doors, and gates. Janus is known as the god of the new year and is often depicted with two faces, one that looks forward into the future and the other looking backward into the past.

Janus is also associated with keys, symbolizing his protection of entries and exits and represents beginnings, transitions, and the passage of time. In ancient times, offerings would be made to Janus for births, marriages, funerals as well as the new year to ensure an auspicious start.

In the spirit of Janus, January is the perfect time to create a vision board that looks back over the past year to celebrate where you have been and to look forward into the new year to illuminate where you would like to go!

January Vision Board

Materials:

  • Posterboard

  • Glue

  • Magazines and photos (inspiring images)

  • Quotes and affirmations

  • Paper and pencil

Directions:

Begin by separating the board into the past on the left and the future on the right. After writing down your gratitude for the last year and your intentions for the new year, find images that resonate with you and create a collage with one side the old and the other new. When the board is finished, use it as a touchstone to help center yourself and manifest your dreams in the coming year!
