The English folklore figure Jack Frost is first mentioned in the 1734 book Round About Our Coal Fire: Or, Christmas Entertainments. The first illustration of Frost appears in 1861 in this drawing by Thomas Nast, in which Jack is depicted as an icicle-laden Union war general. In 1901, L. Frank Baum immortalized Jack Frost in his book ‘The Runaway Shadows, or A Trick of Jack Frost.’ In American folklore, Jack is now seen as the magical personification of winter, and  he is often depicted carrying a bucket and paintbrush that he uses to swirl fern-like patterns across windows on chilly mornings.
