Fairy rings of mushrooms (Marasmius oreades) often magically appear in late summer, and it is said they are made by dancing fairies and pixies. In German folklore, they are known as witches’ circles and are believed to be made by witches on Walpurgis Night. In Scandinavian folklore, they are said to be made by elves or pixies, and they are thought to bring good luck.

Many superstitions warn people not to enter one of these supernatural rings or risk dancing endlessly until succumbing to exhaustion or being transported to a dangerous, enchanted world. Superstitions in Wales recommend rescuing a person trapped inside a fairy ring by casting wild marjoram and thyme into the circle to release the victim inside.
