From ancient times, bears have inspired folklore as symbols of strength, healing, fearlessness, and wisdom. Shapeshifters, protectors, and kings, these mythical guides were often thought to be spirit guides, now inhabited by the souls of ancestors. In Appalachian folklore, it is said that if bears hibernate early, the winter will be long and cold, but if they go in late, winter will be mild and warmer. In Celtic folklore, the bear was a symbol of strength and King Arthur was named after the word ‘artos,’ meaning bear-like.
